Personal profile
Dr. Gupta graduated from Rice University summa cum laude with a B.A. in Biochemistry, and subsequently earned his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern in 2008. After completing his internship in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, he began residency in Radiology at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, which he subsequently completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, TX, where has also completed a fellowship in Abdominal Imaging. As Director of MRI and Vice-Chair of Translational Imaging at Houston Methodist Hospital, he oversees departmental MRI policies and protocols while incorporating next-gen diagnostic and interventional imaging technologies into clinical practice. He is an active member of the Society of Advanced Body Imaging as well as the Society of Abdominal Radiology, among others. He is a regular reviewer for the Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography and Abdominal Imaging and has reviewed for several additional journals as well.
Research interests
Perhaps more than any other technology, imaging (such as CT, MRI, and ultrasound) has transformed modern medicine over the past 50 years. Dr. Gupta believes in the power of next-gen imaging tools to drive further transformative improvements in how we approach preventative health, non-invasive diagnosis, as well as minimally invasive therapies in the future. A few specific areas of interest are:
- ‘Whole-Body’ MRI – WB-MRI has recently become an accepted modality for periodic screening in patients with certain cancer predisposition syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni Syndrome. While WB-MRI is currently focused on cancer detection, Dr. Gupta is exploring the potential of WB-MRI as a preventative health tool in the early detection of a host of additional common diseases.
- Quantum CT – Next-gen photon counting detectors are poised to revolutionize the way we use CT scans to diagnose disease by allowing material decomposition, increased resolution and reduced radiation dose. Dr. Gupta aim’s to be at the forefront of this revolution by leading clinical adoption and evidence generation.
- Ablative therapies – Imaging has the power to not only diagnose non-invasively, but also to guide minimally invasive treatments. Dr. Gupta has a keen interest in minimally invasive ablative therapies, particularly in the treatment of liver tumors.
