note = "Funding Information: Rapidly rising through the ranks at Vanderbilt, Ray was promoted from assistant to associate to full professor within 6 years. In 1997, he assumed the position as director of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and expanded the division, recruiting 6 new faculty members. Under his leadership, the division{\textquoteright}s research funding and clinical revenue more than doubled. He was also able to expand the scope of the GI Division{\textquoteright}s NIH training grant and to successfully compete for a Program Project Grant and an NIH-funded Digestive Disease Research Center (DDRC), one of only 16 in country. With a dual focus in cancer and gastroenterology, he was named Associate Director of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center for Cancer Prevention and Control, in charge of the whole cancer prevention program. In late 2003, Ray stepped down from his role as GI division director to dedicate more time to the DDRC and to his primary research program.
