Abstract

Because the clinical presentations of such infections as well as the epidemiology and therapeutics have changed since these reports were published, we reviewed our experience over a 12-year period with anaerobic septicemia occurring in cancer patients. This analysis of 451 such episodes represents the largest series reported among this patient population. This review will cover only infections caused by anaerobes other than Clostridium spp. as their clinical and microbiological characteristics as well as the morbidity and mortality from such infections in cancer patients differ significantly from these factors associated with other anaerobic organisms.
