Abstract
This paper outlines in detail the functional aspects of the tongue and the goals to be achieved in reconstruction. It also presents a historical review of tongue reconstruction methods. A classification scheme of tongue deficits and an approach to reconstruction of the tongue based on the size of the defect and associated tissue losses are presented. A review of the most recent literature regarding this topic has been broken down and clearly defined into the essentials of modern tongue reconstruction.
