After completing his surgical oncology fellowship, Dr. Kaplan joined Baylor College of Medicine´s department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He became full professor and director of their division of Gynecologic Oncology in 1979. Dr. Kaplan joined Houston Methodist Hospital in 2005 as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Golden Forceps Award for outstanding medical student education, and was named as one of the Best Doctors in America from 1995 through 2003. Dr. Kaplan is a member of several professional societies including the American Cancer Society, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Surgeons, and is a founding member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

Research interests

Dr. Kaplan´s primary area of research is the development and refinement of procedures for early identification and treatment of gynecological tumors. He is also interested in the development of reconstructive procedures for problems that occur following radical pelvic surgery.
