Abstract
Using the scanning electron microscope and the transmission electron microscope, otosclerotic stapes were examined. The preliminary data suggest that the initial process of decalcification seems to be related to the lacunae system and the osteocytes. Collagen-rich microfoci were noted along the invasion line. In most cases, these foci were distinguishable from the normal bone. The disappearance of the cartilaginous lamina of the footplate seems to be a constant finding in otosclerosis.
