Abstract
The synthesis and secretion of progesterone (P4) by the corpus luteum in the luteal phase are of crucial importance in determining the implantation of the blastocyst and the maintenance of pregnancy in the early first trimester. Luteal phase deficiency (LPD) is associated with many fertility disorders and higher pregnancy losses. Although several studies, in human and animal models, have been performed to understand luteal biology, there is still a lack of knowledge on luteal phase defects and controversies regarding the diagnosis and potential treatment of luteal inadequacy. Vitamin and non-vitamin supplements such as vitamin D, inositol and melatonin are newer innovative treatments that could provide support for the luteal phase defects.
