Drugs and ethanol testing at the point of care

An evidence-based systematic review of the literature on point-of-care testing (POCT) for drugs of abuse and ethanol was performed as part of a broader review of POCT undertaken by the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry for the development of a Laboratory Medicine Practice Guideline. This article summarizes the results of that review of POCT drug testing and highlights areas where further studies would be helpful in establishing the appropriate role of POCT for drugs and ethanol in various clinical and nonclinical settings.
