Abstract

Considering the importance of surface stress in controlling mechanical response of nanoscale structures, the effect of surface stresses on the elastic field around a nano-cylindrical hole in an elastic half-plane was analyzed. An analytical solution of the size-dependent stress field around the nanocylindrical hole was obtained when the surface of the elastic half-plane was subjected to a surface loading. The results revealed strong size-dependence of the stress field and the surface deformation on the surface stress. The surface displacement directly above the cylindrical hole was a function of the surface stress, and shallow sink-in of the surface occurred for negative surface stress.
