Abstract

Ten per cent formaldehyde was instilled into the bladders of 13 mongrel dogs. Nine of the 13 dogs had detectable amounts of formaldehyde in their serum thirty minutes later. In 1 dog spontaneous gangrene and perforation of the bladder developed, and 3 others died of related causes within three weeks. Histologic examination of the bladder was abnormal in all but 2 dogs. The chronic effects of topical formaldehyde appeared to be dystrophic calcification within the bladder wall.
