Abstract

Physical activity (PA) is emerging as an effective tool in the prevention and treatment of major depression. Exercise immunology in psychiatry is a rapidly evolving field given advances in immunology and greater understanding of the clinical effects of PA. Understanding the immunology of PA is important for determining the unique immune signatures of various types of PA and determining if a precision medicine approach can be used to treat depression in certain patient cohorts. This chapter aims to explore the immune-modulatory effects of PA and to explore avenues for developing targeted treatment of depression using PA, based on the unique immune profile of a patient. There is some early evidence to suggest immune biomarkers can be used to improve outcomes in some populations of clinical depression.
