Abstract
To the Editor: Although the paper by Hartung et al. in the February 14 issue was thorough and well controlled, I was disappointed by the emphasis on high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the title and discussion. From their Table 2 it is clear that all lipid and lipoprotein values reported varied significantly in their groups. Until we know more about the primary change in interactions between very-low-density lipoproteins and HDL, in most clinical circumstances measurement of total cholesterol and triglycerides will be sufficient. Because of the rapid transfer of information from the Journal to the local newspapers, many patients request HDL.
