Abstract
Although controversy exists regarding optimal femoral component selection in revision total hip arthroplasty, extensively coated femoral components are ideally suited for use in most cases. In many revisions situations, proximal femoral bone loss is present and extensively coated components allow immediate fixation and eventual bone ingrowth in the intact femoral diaphysis. Reported results after extensively coated femoral components are, in general, superior to results using other types of components. The major drawbacks to extensively coated implants are proximal stress shielding and thigh pain.
