Abstract
The two shear layers of an initally laminar plane jet (aspect ratios 96:1 and 23:1) are marked with fluorescent dyes of two different colours and the instability, roll up and interaction of the two shear layers are studied via cine films of the flow field illuminated with a thin sheet of laser light. The interactions between the two shear layers depend on the initial condition. For the initially fully developed velocity profile, antisymmetric vortices are formed periodically in the shear layers; pairing of opposite signed vortices across the jet centreline produces counter gradient transport and intense mixing.
