Abstract

A healthy daily diet for most adults consists of about 2½ cups of vegetables, 2 cups of fruits, 6 ounces of grains, 3 cups of dairy, 5½ ounces of protein foods, and 2 tablespoons of oils. When faced with health conditions, like kidney disease, adjustments in the amount of these foods are recommended. Some people are able to meet their daily nutrient goals by switching to a diet that is considered more plant-based. The main recommendation is to work with a dietitian for guidance on achieving the right combination of foods for your individual needs. A good partnership with a dietitian is recommended for all patients with kidney disease.
