Abstract

An alternative method of assessing the potential for herniation in acute, severe head injury is proposed, based upon the Fourier decomposition of the intracranial pressure (ICP) pulse waveform. Utilizing the pulsatile changes in pressure induced by each cardiac cycle, Fourier analysis reveals information related to the brain stiffness or compliance, and possibly to the total brain blood flow as well. The system, utilizing an implantable fiber-optic pressure transducer for maximum stability of pressure recording, obtains ECG and pressure data through a conventional intensive care unit patient monitor.
