Abstract
The prevalence and acceptance of complementary and alternative medicines including Kampo medicine have been increasing worldwide. Kampo herbal remedies are reported to have a wide range of indications and have attracted much attention due to reports suggesting that, in addition to effective disease treatment regimens, Kampo maintains the quality of life. Today, Kampo medicine is integrated into the Japanese national health care system, and a total of 148 formulas are officially approved as prescription drugs and covered by the national health insurance system in Japan. In this chapter we focus our attention on Kampo medicine that plays a role in regulating age-associated neurological diseases. We emphasize both clinical and preclinical evidence for the application of Kampo medicine in dementia, depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and also neuropsychiatric disorders.
