Abstract

A numerical procedure is presented for the time-transient analysis of the thermo-mechanical phenomena occurring during steel welding processes and of the residual stresses. At each time step the temperature field is calculated taking into account temperature-dependent thermal properties; then for subintervals of each time step elastoplastic analyses are carried out considering again temperature-dependent mechanical properties. The thermal load is simulated using a procedure based on Gaussian heat source surfaces. The time integration of the nonlinear equation of heat transport is carried out using a three-level scheme, with variable step sizes. A numerical example of practical interest is shown, for which experimental data are available.
