Numerical study of blood flow through carotid bifurcation

Abstract

The nature of the pulsatile flow in human carotid bifurcation and the influence of the flow on the diagnosis of atherosclerosis and the degree of stenosis are studied. It is found that the general flow features are the same for the 2D and 3D models. The bifurcation of the flow generates the very strong secondary flows in the internal and external carotids, and the secondary flow remains strong until outside the carotid sinus. The shear stress remains low throughout the pulse cycle, with mean shear stress independent of the pulsatility. It is also a function of the Reynolds number and the flow rate ratio.
