Abstract

This book presents the application of clinical chemistry to the study of the biological mechanisms which maintain contrast electrolyte, fluid and osmotic balance in human beings. A description is given of how fluid imbalance influences the progress of disease. The book describes the solutions used in the maintenance of the electrolyte balance and details the forces in action in maintaining constant calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphate and sulfate levels in the blood. It also examines how the kidney and great glands function as an integral part of a homeostatic mechanism for the preservation of balance and shows how the findings of the clinical laboratory can be used in the practice of medicine.
