Abstract

This book is the second in a series designed to explore the application of chemical pathology and chemical physiology to human health and disease. The authors review the biochemistry, metabolism, constituents and morphology of erythrocytes. The book starts with the erythrocyte morphology and erythropoiesis. In the following chapters the chemistry, metabolism and chemical constituents are studied as electrolytes, electrolyte transport, cell membrane, lipids, glucose metabolism, galactose metabolism, glycogen metabolism, glycogen storage disease, enzymic defects, hemolytic anaemia, globoside metabolism and sphingolipids. The last 5 chapters deal with the heme synthesis, porphyrins, billirubin, hemoglobin and hemoglobin variants, heme proteins, pernicious anemia and vitamin B12 and folic acid. The text of each chapter is documented by numerous references, review articles and books. The book may be especially helpful as a study book or source book to clinical chemists, chemical pathologists or hematologists, scientific personnel of hematology laboratories, and to graduate and post-graduate students in clinical chemistry and hematology.
