Abstract
The steroids present in urine from newborn infants (1-6 days old) have been studied. The steroid conjugates were extracted from the urine by Amberlite XAD-2 resin and were hydrolysed by enzymes. Following extraction the steroids were analysed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Of the steroids identified 3α,6α-dihydroxy-5β-pregnan-20-one, 3α,16α-dihydroxy-5β-pregnan-20-one, 5ξ-pregnane-3ξ,16ξ,20ξ-triol, 3β-hydroxy-5,16-pregnadien-20-one, 5-pregnene-3β,20α,21-triol, 5-pregnene-3β,16α,20α,21-tetrol, 3β,16α,21-trihydroxy-5-pregnen-20-one and 5-pregnene-3β,16ξ,17α,20ξ-tetrol have not previously been reported as occurring in urine from infants. The approximate rate of excretion (μg/24 h) of these steroids is reported.
