Abstract

After incubation of 4-androstene-3, 17-dione, 5α-androstane-3, 17-dione, 3α-hydroxy-5α-androstan-17-one, 3β-hydroxy-5α-androstan-17-dione, 17β-hydroxy-4-androsten-3-one, and 17β-hydroxy-5α-androstan-3-one with rat liver microsomes 18-hydroxy-4-androstene-3, 17-dione, 18-hydroxy-5α-androstane-3, 17-dione, 3α, 18-dihydroxy-5α-androstan-17-one, and 3β, 18-dihydroxy-5α-androstan-17-one have been isolated and identified by thin-layer chromatography and by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It is concluded that the liver may be an important extraadrenal site of 18-hydroxylation of steroids.
