Abstract

The authors observed 11 cases of adult giant emphysematous bullae of the lung during over a 6 year period including 7 cases of bilateral involvement. Surgery was performed on 10 cases for which bullectomy and plication on 9 cases (bilateral 7 and unilateral 2), and segmentectomy with bullectomy and plication on one case, were done. Especially for bilateral lesions, simultaneous operation on both sides by median sternotomy was performed. Neither serious complications nor recurrence of bullae were noticed. The results of the operation were satisfactory in terms of pulmonary function as well as clinical symptoms.
