Abstract

Meconium, plasma from the umbilical cord, and urine from infants contained two androstenetriols which were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry as 5-androstene-3β,16α,17β-triol and 5-androstene-3β,16β,17α-triol. Only in meconium was the latter steroid the predominant epimer. Faeces from infants 4-6 weeks of age also contained these isomers and in addition 5-androstene-3β,16α,17α-triol and 5-androstene-3β,16β,17β-triol were identified.
