Abstract
One hypothesis put forth to explain atherogenesis is that the lesions originate with neoplastically transformed smooth muscle cells (SMC) in the vessel wall. If this is so, SMC derived from lesions may exhibit transformed behavior in tissue culture, for example, a capacity to replicate infinitely and a rapid rate of proliferation compared to cells derived from uninvolved vessel wall.
