Abstract

Zika virus was discovered in East Africa in 1947 and remained an obscure mosquito-borne virus until its first documented epidemic in 2007. Its introduction in the Western Hemisphere in 2015 has been accompanied by the emergence of rare disease manifestations, notably congenital Zika syndrome and Guillain-Barré syndrome. The widespread establishment of authochtonous transmission cycles throughout the tropics and subtropical areas, has put a third of the global population at risk of infection and a race to understand the mechanisms of pathogenesis and development of effective coutntermeasures in controlling its spread.
