Dr. Verma completed his undergraduate and medical education in Amritsar, India, after which he came to the US for his residency and fellowship. He trained at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and performed a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at Duke University Medical Center. Upon completion of his fellowship at Duke, Dr. Verma returned to Baylor College of Medicine as an assistant professor in the Peter Kellaway Section of Neurophysiology in the Department of Neurology. His research at Baylor focused on brainwave changes during epileptic seizures for the development of new diagnostic and treatment strategies. He joined Houston Methodist Hospital in 2007 as director of the Sleep Disorders Center. In addition to his clinical responsibilities and robust research program, Dr. Verma is an active member of several national and local societies and has been director of the adult epilepsy camp sponsored by the Epilepsy Society of America since 2001.

Research interests

Dr. Verma’s research focuses on understanding the factors that influence the outcome of epilepsy surgery with the goal to develop methods for improving the outcome. He is very interested in quality of life issues in epilepsy patients and treatment options for patients with medically intractable epilepsy. A second key focus area is the understanding of the pathophysiology and development of treatment options for patients with sleep disorders.
