Dr. Michael J. Reardon is a native Houstonian who attended Baylor College of Medicine where he graduated with honors and as a member of AOA. He did his general surgery residency under Dr. Michael DeBakey and cardiothoracic residency under Dr. Denton Cooley. He joined the staff of the Houston Methodist Hospital in 1985 and ran a private practice until 1993. He then joined the full time faculty of BCM rising to Professor of Surgery with tenure, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Director of the thoracic residency program. He subsequently joined the academic group at the HMH as Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
His interests have centered on aortic surgery, cardiac valve surgery and cardiac tumors. His recent research and clinical interests have focused on minimally invasive, catheter-based approaches to these areas. He serves on the national steering committee for the CoreValve, SurTAVI and reprise III TAVR trials and as national surgical PI on the SurTAVI trial, reprise III trial and the Gore type A dissection trial. Dr. Reardon also serves as the international surgical PI for the Reprise III trial.
He holds the position of Clinical Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center and created the multi-institution, multidisciplinary cardiac tumor team with HMH and MDA. He has operated on more primary cardiac sarcomas than any other surgeon globally and written extensively on this topic. Dr. Reardon's group recently published the largest series of surgically treated primary cardiac sarcomas in the world. He has served as elected president of the medical staff for the HMH and received numerous awards including the Overstreet Award and Noon Award. He currently holds the Allison Family Distinguished Chair of Cardiovascular Research and divides his time between building innovative clinical, research and educational programs.
Research interests
He has been the principal and co-investigator on several industry and government-sponsored clinical trials and research initiatives, and he is currently on the national steering and screening committees for the Medtronic CoreValve US Pivotal Trial and the international steering committee for the SurTAVI Trial, for which he is also a national surgical principal investigator. His research interests include cardiac tumor treatment, catheter based approaches to structural heart disease, catheter based and open aortic disease treatment Having published more than 300 articles and abstracts, Dr. Reardon conducts peer reviews for publications such as the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Circulation and is the associate editor of surgery for the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal.
